HEALTHY lifestyle classes held in community venues across the Forest of Dean have been in the spotlight after one Mitcheldean session marked a special milestone for a much-loved participant.

The Forest of Dean District Council-run exercise classes help residents improve their health, mobility and wellbeing, while also offering an important social lifeline.

A recent session at Mitcheldean Community Centre paused its usual routine to celebrate the 90th birthday of regular attendee Bill, who was surprised with a specially written poem.

The tribute, written by fellow class member Phil Goulding with input from others, reflects both Bill’s life and character and the strong sense of friendship fostered through the council’s healthy lifestyle programme.

The sessions form part of the council’s wider exercise referral scheme, offering supported activities for people with long-term health conditions.

Below is the poem in full.

A Friend Shared (at 90):

In old Mitcheldean At the foot of Plump Hill Lives a “gent” of great character, Our good friend, named Bill.

Born a Glasgow lad, Been here for decades, Most often met cheerful, So rarely seen fazed.

His sight taken early — Nature can be unkind, But gifted back wisdom, He sees much through his mind.

Local affairs interest him, Though he’s rarely irate. But be advised, he’s always up For a robust debate.

Well known in the parish, Many friends at St Michael’s, He’s spoken in media On curious lanes for cycles.

He takes his exercise with us, Beloved in our class; With balance to boast, He never lands on his…

…bahookie —

a Scottish word for backside, Nine decades have passed Since his arrival, in thirty-five.

Bill’s easy to recognise When he’s out and about, Especially when sporting His famed duffle coat.

Bill, today we salute you — There can be no doubt: Your momentous achievement, Scoring 90 Not Out!
