THE FOREST of Dean Camera Club marked the close of its 2024/25 season on Monday, April 28, celebrating a year of creativity, achievement, and community engagement.
The evening, which included the club’s AGM and the presentation of awards, highlighted a season filled with inspiring speakers, active participation, and recognition of outstanding photography.
Kicking off in September, the season started with a special presentation by renowned wildlife photographer Robin Smith.
Known for his work on The Secret Life of Cats and Wildlife in a War Zone, Mr Smith also contributed to popular BBC programs like Autumn Watch and The One Show.
Throughout the year, the club was fortunate to host a range of guest speakers, including Leigh Woodford, a motor sport photographer with an impressive list of qualifications.
Mr Woodford's talk in November captivated members with insights into the world of motorsport photography.
Local talent was also showcased, with another talk from Mr Smith, who has filmed alongside the legendary Sir David Attenborough. These visits, along with numerous other activities, kept members engaged and inspired throughout the season.
The club introduced a new six-week beginner’s photography course, which proved particularly popular among younger enthusiasts.
This course will return in the autumn to offer more opportunities for budding photographers to develop their skills.
Members have also been busy supporting local sports clubs, including Forest Football, Rugby, and Athletics, as well as contributing to events like the Wye Dean Rally, the Bream Horticultural Society's Autumn Show, and exhibitions at Gloucester Cathedral.
Competitions have been a key focus for the club this year. Members not only competed in the club’s internal competitions but also entered prestigious international events, known as Saloons.
Notably, club member Alan Castle received a bronze award at the Cheltenham Saloon, while chairman Huw Jones was awarded the 'Founders Cup' by the Guild of Photographers for his stunning shot of a try scored by Hartpury Women’s Rugby Club.
Young members have also excelled, with Cara Ennis winning two awards in the annual competition run by the Gloucester Naturalist Society.
The club’s membership reflects a diverse range of ages and interests, with strong representation from both women photographers and teenagers.
For those interested in viewing the club’s work, a display is currently on show at the Tourist Office in Coleford.
Although regular Monday night meetings pause over the summer, the club remains active, hosting outdoor meet-ups and social events.
Last year, members visited the new zoo in Bristol and had a special private evening at Chepstow Castle with period-costumed models.
Looking ahead, the club’s calendar for next year is already shaping up to be just as busy. Bill Ward, known for his role in EastEnders and recent performances in The Full Monty stage tour, will be visiting as a guest speaker.
It’s been a bumper year for the Forest of Dean Camera Club, and with another busy season ahead, the club continues to be a vital hub for photography enthusiasts of all levels.
