Gloucestershire Two

Tredworth 7

A VISIT to The Lannet just before Christmas has become a tradition for Westbury. This year's short trip came on the back of a good run of form.

The Tredworth pitch, surprisingly, was perfectly playable, allowing Westbury to clinch their fifth win in a row with a steely display.

Westbury had two early chances to take the lead, but Steve Wood narrowly missed both penalties, hitting the woodwork with one.

The game came to life on 25 minutes when Westbury put together several good phases of play, off-loading the ball out of contact.

Phil Hayward and Dale Garside repeatedly drove into the Tredworth defence.

The support play of Pete Webb and Richard Edginton was crucial in keeping moves flowing when they might otherwise have broken down.

Westbury's first try came just before half-time.

Steve Wood stood firm in the tackle and some quick recycling from John Duffin released Martin Parks. With his coach Steve Lewis screaming at him to find support, Parks bulldozed through the Tredworth tackles to touch down under the posts. Wood converted, then slotted a penalty shortly after for a 10-0 lead at the interval.

The second-half was repeatedly interrupted by stoppages.

Both sides still played some decent rugby, with Westbury stretching their lead to 15-0 with the second try of the game.

Westbury took a quick tap penalty in the Tredworth 22 and try machine Phil Hayward went over with a swallow dive.

The final quarter of the game was played in deteriorating light.

Westbury continued to play a high risk, attacking game, but one mistake too many allowed Tredworth to score in the corner.

An excellent conversion was the final act of the match.
