THE last known living former teacher to have taught Five Acres School says he is delighted with proposals to revert Lakers School back to its original name.

Ninety-one-year-old Keith Wilkes started teaching at the school in 1946 - a year before it was renamed as Berry Hill Secondary School after being demobbed from the RAF and taught PE there until 1984 a year before it became Lakers School.

He said: “It’s great that the school is being renamed as Five Acres High School.

“I’ve seen the school change it’s name so many times and now it’s going back to its original name. It’s come full circle and I’m very pleased.”The Gloucestershire Education board in 1914 allocated £450 to build the school and a further £250 to furnish it to be paid back over 50 years - this would amount to £74,168.65 in today’s money.

Mr Wilkes, who published the book Teacher In The Forest, said he enjoyed his time teaching at the school.”

Renaming Lakers as Five Acres High School was chosen by a vote among parents and pupils which took 30 per cent of the votes.

Other options included: Five Acres Academy 21 per cent, Nine Wells Academy 16 per cent, Berry Hill school eight per cent and Berry Hill Academy seven per cent.
