LYDBROOK Band has announced the appointment of acclaimed trombonist and conductor Dr Brett Baker as its new Musical Director, marking a return to his roots in the Forest of Dean.

Dr Baker will take up the role officially on Saturday, June 1, with his first engagement being a concert on the scenic Riverbank in Lydbrook.

Originally a member of the band in his early teens, Brett credited his formative years in Lydbrook for shaping his musical career: “I have had a fond association with Lydbrook since joining the band as a young trombonist aged around 13 or 14,”

He added: “The positive encouragement and tuition I received made a huge difference to me.”

Dr Baker went on to say he was excited to return to the band at a pivotal moment in its history, he said: “I am very excited to be working with the band again as they move back into the Championship section next year, this time as the band’s Musical Director.

Lydbrook has some ambitious plans over the coming years that I am keen to help facilitate.”

Band Secretary Robert Morgan welcomed the appointment, saying: “It will be wonderful to have Dr Baker involved with Lydbrook Band on a permanent basis as he moves back to live in the Forest of Dean in the summer.

We’ve always had a strong relationship, and he’s returned on numerous occasions as guest soloist. We’re looking forward to working with Dr Baker in his new capacity and are excited to take advantage of his wealth of experience.”

The upcoming riverside concert, on June 1, promises to be a special occasion for the local community, not just as a celebration of music, but as a full-circle moment for one of its most successful musical sons.
