PICTURES of deer which have become caught in fencing in the Forest of Dean have been shared widely across social media with animal lovers asking if something can be done to prevent the accidents.

The young deer have been pictured with their legs caught in the top of the fencing between two lengths of wire.

Jason Burford, who walks his dog along Woorgreens, off Crabtree Hill in Cinderford most days, has seen the deer struggling and took pictures.

Mr Burford said: “A load of us walk up there regularly and, in the space of a week, we found one (deer) trapped and another trapped in the same way last Wednesday.

“The deer have jumped over the fence and caught their leg in the top. One was alive and was screaming and shouting until a Forestry Commission marksman shot it.

“They said the deer’s leg was too bad for it to live with. They are only young deer and so I decided to bring the situation to everyone’s attention.”

Some of the comments on social media have expressed their own horror at the scenes.

One said: “This is horrific,” while another said: “We pulled a small deer out of similar fence by Woorgreen a few years ago. The problem is the deer don’t see the fence and the run straight into it.”
