THE US star behind hit musical Hamilton has wowed fans around the world by posting “beautiful’ photos of the Forest of Dean, where his climactic scenes of the second series of BBC TV fantasy series His Dark Materials were filmed.

Some fans thought the scene had been generated by CGI it was so beautiful.

But revealing where the woodland scenes around the fictional city of Cittàgazze were shot, Lin Manuel-Miranda tweeted: “We filmed it in The Forest of Dean.

“It really was the most beautiful week. And isn’t @cristela9 (voiceover co-star Cristela Alonzo) wonderful. Thank you for watching. #HisDarkMaterials.”

The final episode of the joint BBC/HBO drama was aired at the end of December on BBC One, with both series available to watch on iPlayer, and fans can look forward to a third series after TV bosses confirmed earlier this month that the show has been recommissioned.

One fan posted: “Lin is that Puzzlewood? Please say yes.

“I love that place and every time there is a forest on TV I always say to my children it’s Puzzlewood.

“My daughter adores you, so for it to actually be PW, would be amazing.”

Based on Philip Pullman’s acclaimed trilogy of novels, His Dark Materials was produced by Bad Wolf and New Line Cinema in Wales, and has crossed the border several times to shoot scenes.

Lin, who also starred in hit sequel Mary Poppins Returns, plays US aeronaut Lee Scoresby, and came to the Forest to film a shoot-out with soldiers from a religious order trying to keep knowledge of other worlds a secret.

He also posted a film of himself and co-star Andrew Scott travelling to the set on jeeps while pretending to be Sam Neill’s character in Jurassic Park.

He said: “UK fans of #HisDarkMaterials: Thank you for your kind words about the #HisDarkMaterials finale.

“Here is Andrew & I taking turns pretending we are are Sam Neill in Jurassic Park, because we were in similar Jeeps on our way to set.”

Fans described the photos of the Forest, showing trees and sunlight streaming through the canopy, as “stunning”, “amazing”, “gorgeous”, “beautiful” and “magical”.

One poster said: “This scene was seriously so beautiful and I don’t think they could’ve picked a better filming location!”

A US fan added: “Absolutely gorgeous location! I’ll have to make a list of all the places filmed in and do a HDM tour if I ever visit the UK.”

Another added: “Exquisite photos… new bucket list adventure,” and a woman posted: “The location is insanely beautiful.”

One noted that Harry Potter had also been filmed locally, saying: “The same forest that Voldemort used to go? Interesting.”

And another said: “I wish I was there. It’s so stunningly beautiful. I think I might paint one of these pictures.”

An Australian fan said: “It is a magnificent forest. What a great location to shoot in.”

And another woman said: “I thought I recognised good old Puzzlewood… Wonderful place… visited a few years ago.”

Based on Philip Pullman’s trilogy of novels, His Dark Materials is set in a multi-world reality, with the action moving from one world to another.

All humans have animal companions called daemons, which are manifestations of the human soul, and the story follows the life of a young girl named Lyra who is an orphan living with college scholars.

She uncovers a series of kidnappings and its link to a mysterious substance called Dust, which leads her on a journey of epic proportions and ultimately to other worlds.

Woodland attraction Puzzlewood, near Coleford, has become an extension of Hollywood and the small screen over the years.

In July 2014, a scene was filmed for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and other credits include 2020 hit The Secret Garden starring Colin Firth, Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows, The Huntaman: Winter’s War, Merlin, Doctor Who and Da Vinci’s Demons.
