A DAD had to be treated by paramedics after trying to put out a chimney fire himself.

The man climbed onto the roof of a single-storey extension with a hose pipe to stop the fire spreading.

But he had to be treated by paramedics after burning his hands and feet on the roof tiles during the Hallowe'en night blaze.

Two fire engines from Gloucester raced to Bulley Lane, Churcham when the fire broke out in the family home at 11.15pm on October 31.

The fire appears to have started in a woodburner chimney in a kitchen extension and the householder did not want it spreading along the roof to the rest of the house.

"By the time we had got there he had climbed onto the roof and was using hosepipes to try and extinguish it himself," said watch commander Mark Bostock.

"He was lifting up the roof tiles to reach the timbers smouldering underneath and that's how he burned his hands and feet.

"It's not something I would recommend people doing, but he did not want it to spread."

The man did not need to go to hospital. A 4m by 3m area of the roof was damaged by fire.
