PLANS to make the Forest of Dean the UK’s eighth designated biosphere have taken a major step forward after Gloucestershire County Council pledged its full support to the bid.
The proposal, led by Forest of Dean District Council, aims to secure UNESCO recognition for the area as a model for balancing nature conservation, community wellbeing and sustainable development.
A motion put forward by cabinet member for climate emergency, Councillor Chris McFarling, received overwhelming backing from county councillors, who agreed to provide additional funding and resources to support the district’s bid.
Cllr McFarling said the designation would bring “international recognition and support from UNESCO” and mark a “tremendous achievement” for both the district and the county: “Biospheres teach people to reconnect with nature and live sustainably, earning a living without destroying the environment on which we depend.”
The council has previously consulted with residents about the proposal, addressing concerns over potential impacts on house prices, land access and development.
Officials stressed that biosphere status would not impose any new legislation or restrictions on forestry, mining or access rights, and that traditional Free Mining in the Forest would remain fully protected.
Evidence from other UK biospheres shows that the designation can support economic growth, attract investment, and boost sustainable tourism.
The council says the scheme would help guide future development so that it “acknowledges and works with the natural world” while safeguarding the Forest’s unique character for future generations.
Cllr McFarling added: “Being recognised as a biosphere will not stop growth and development, but it will help shape it in a way that benefits the whole community. It is a global accolade that should fill us with pride and encourage everyone to play their part in protecting the Forest’s future.”
Further public events are being planned to explain the proposal and answer residents’ questions.
