CONTROVERSIAL plans to turn a Mitcheldean property into a care home for vulnerable children have been dropped.

The Priory Group, who manage a number of care homes and specialist schools across the country, have withdrawn their offer for Uplands, on Ross Road.

In the face of public opposition, the group issued a statement saying: "Of paramount importance is identifying locations and properties where we can provide a homely, supportive environment to enable the vulnerable children in our care to thrive and reach their full potential.

"However, on this occasion, in view of the comments from the local community, we have decided to withdraw our offer for this property."

Residents of the adjacent Lining Wood estate packed out the village's town hall last month during a parish council meeting to voice their concerns and objections.

Many villagers feared that the 'vulnerable' nature of the children housed at the care home could lead to problems, including anti-social behaviour.
