PLANS for a new charter promoting fairness, inclusion and respect across the Forest of Dean are being developed by local community groups and the district council.
The proposed Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging (EDIB) Charter is being created by the Forest of Dean Inclusion Group alongside Forest of Dean District Council, with the aim of encouraging organisations and residents to help build a district where everyone feels welcome and valued.
The initiative is being championed by Councillor Trevor Roach, the council's Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and the Voice of the Seldom Heard Champion.
Council leaders say the charter will build on the area's existing strengths and focus on promoting fairness for all residents, regardless of factors such as health, ethnicity, sexuality or background.
The charter will also seek to recognise the value of different perspectives and experiences within local communities, while encouraging greater participation in community life and ensuring residents feel they belong.
Following discussion on social media, the council has stressed that the proposed EDIB Charter will have no impact on the historic Charter of the Forest and will not replace any existing rights or charters associated with the district.
Instead, it is intended to provide a framework for the council and other organisations to improve how they communicate with residents, listen to communities and design services.
The council said the charter will encourage people and organisations to commit to treating one another with dignity and respect while challenging inequality where it exists.
As part of the initiative, the council highlighted the role of its Member Champions, who work with officers, community groups and partner organisations on a range of issues including support for young people, financial inclusion, active travel, river water quality and community wellbeing.
Further details on the EDIB Charter are expected to be released as development work continues.
