COLEFORD honoured it bravest hero Captain Angus Buchanan exactly 100 years since he was awarded the Victoria Cross by the unveiling of a memorial stone.

The service at the clock tower was attended by two of the soldier’s descendants, Aldyth Davies from Abergavenny and Rev Phillip Boynor from Llanharan, who are both second cousins.

Councillor Nick Penny , deputy mayor of Coleford said ”The Town Council is honoured and delighted to be able to lay this commemorative stone in recognition of the outstanding bravery shown by Angus Buchanan. Whilst this act alone is a life time achievement Angus Buchanan is so much more to Coleford.

"He left a great legacy in the beautiful Angus Buchanan Recreation Ground as well as many roads and buildings named after him.

The ceremony was conducted by Chris Howell while Sgt. Robert Ayres from The Regimental Band of The Royal Welsh sounded the Last Post in front of the war memorial on Coleford Clock Tower.

The design of the memorial paving stone was chosen through a competition open to the public and made of York stone Scoutmoor.
