IN reply to Jane Baker's letter dated June 28.

I have yet to see a letter of support for the Angus Buchanan Trust apart from letters from the trust itself. Therefore most letters are in support of the bowling club and obviously biased towards the bowling club.

Coleford Bowling Club has put in a lot of hard unpaid work over the 90 years or so they have been on the Buchanan recreation ground. This has put them in a position to be able to make the money for the improvements and have the facilities to help local charities. They also had some wealthy members who put money into the club in the early years.

It seems this hard work is in threat of being taken from them.

To answer the point raised about fertiliser on the green. Fertiliser has been used on this green and all other bowling greens; cricket pitches etc for many years. It has not caused any problems on the Buchanan ground being so close to the kids' play area at any time. If fertiliser is used you are advised not to lick your fingers as the woods are travelling on the surface where the fertiliser has been used.

The trust wished to use this bowling green for a children's play area.

I cannot comment on any negotiations the Buchanan trust and Coleford Bowling Club are in at present or the new terms they were offered last year.

This letter also asks the question, why does the trust have no equipment etc? It seems in this letter the trust expects handouts from the bowling club on top of the rent which has been paid regularly.

Obviously the trust is a non profit making charity and this reflected in the £75 a year rent but this amount I feel should be amended amicably.

The Buchanan Recreation Trust was, I thought, set up to manage the trust land. This is for the people of Coleford to enjoy recreational activities of which bowls is classed, as it caters for all ages, even people into their 90s. I am sure that Angus Buchanan would be proud of what the Buchanan trust and Coleford Bowling Club have achieved for the residents of Coleford from his legacy over the years, and it would be a shame for this relationship to end.
