CINDERFORD’s War Memorial is undergoing a programme of specialist conservation to ensure it continues to stand as a lasting tribute to the town’s fallen heroes.

The memorial, which occupies a prominent place in the town centre, was professionally cleaned earlier this week. Skilled craftsmen are now carrying out repointing work to secure the stonework and protect it from the long-term effects of weathering.

The memorial, which bears the names of local servicemen who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars, has long been a focal point for the community.

Each year it forms the centrepiece of the town’s Remembrance Sunday service, when residents gather to pay their respects and reflect on the sacrifices made.

Cinderford Town Council said the conservation work is part of its ongoing responsibility to maintain and protect the town’s heritage.

A council spokesperson said: “The War Memorial is an important part of Cinderford’s history and identity. It stands as a permanent reminder of the bravery and sacrifice of those who gave their lives in service, and it is essential that we care for it properly.”

The council added that using specialist conservation techniques helps to preserve the memorial’s historic fabric while ensuring it remains structurally sound and readable for future generations.

The cleaning and repointing work is expected to continue over the coming days. The council emphasised that this kind of maintenance is not about making the memorial look new, but about ensuring it can continue to fulfil its role as a place of remembrance and reflection for many years to come.

The project is part of a wider recognition of the importance of conserving war memorials across the country, particularly as they continue to serve as focal points for remembrance within communities.
