A CHARITY rugby match held in memory of Andrew ‘Happy’ Martin has raised £2,500 for Great Oaks Hospice, with additional funds going to Cancer Research UK and the 4Ed Motor Neurone Disease campaign.
A cheque presentation took place at Cinderford Rugby Club on Friday, June 20 at 12 noon, where Happy’s wife Karen and daughter Lauren formally handed over the donation to the Forest-based hospice. The event also included a buffet and refreshments for those in attendance.
The match was organised by friends, family and members of Cinderford RFC to celebrate the life of Andrew Martin, a much-loved figure in the local rugby and wider community.
The day brought people together at the club’s Dockham Road ground, raising money for three charities that held special meaning for Andrew and his family.
Alongside Great Oaks Hospice and Cancer Research UK, the event also supported the 4Ed campaign, set up by former Gloucester Rugby player Ed Slater following his diagnosis with Motor Neurone Disease.
The 4Ed fund aims to proactively help those who are having to adapt to ever changing circumstances, helping to relieve some of the financial pressures that come with it.
The campaign strives to make a meaningful difference to the lives of those grappling with the effects of MND and to address the challenges families encounter.
A spokesperson for Great Oaks Hospice said: “Thank you to everyone involved in the Andrew ‘Happy’ Martin Memorial Match at Cinderford RFC. Funds were raised for three incredible charities, including Great Oaks. Today Happy’s wife Karen and daughter Lauren presented the cheque for £2,500. Thank you everyone who made the day.”
The presentation was attended by supporters and representatives from the local community, including Glen Webb from Steve Gooch Estate Agents, Donna Roberts, who manages the club’s bar and catering, Jules Evans from the Great Oaks Hospice fundraising team, and Gary Trigg.
