CAMPAIGNERS have welcomed news that a proposed development of Oldbury nuclear power station within sight of Lydney is to be put on hold.
Hitachi Ltd, who own the site on the banks of the Severn Estuary, is stopping early work at Oldbury after a breakdown in talks about finance with the British and Japanese governments.
The implications also affect a major undertaking at the Wylfa Newydd on Anglesey, North Wales.
Duncan Hawthorne, chief executive of Horizon Nuclear Power, which is undertaking the development operation in the UK for Hitachi Ltd, said: “We have been in close discussions with the UK government, in cooperation with the government of Japan, on the financing and associated commercial arrangements for our project for some years now. "
