HISTORY will come to life in Coleford next month as one of the largest historical re-enactment societies in Europe recreates the Battle of Coleford, more than 380 years after the original English Civil War clash.

Coleford Town Council has invited and sponsored The Sealed Knot Society to stage the free two day event on Saturday, August 8, and Sunday, August 9, with members travelling from across the UK to take part in what is expected to be one of the town's biggest historical events of the summer.

The re-enactment will commemorate the Battle of Coleford, fought on February 21, 1643, when a Royalist force diverted from its march towards Gloucester to confront a Parliamentary militia made up of local men defending communities across the Forest of Dean.

Saturday's activities, running from 1.30pm until 4pm, will recreate the fighting through the town's Market Place, close to where the historic events unfolded. Visitors will be able to watch from nearby pavements while following instructions from stewards and re-enactors to ensure the event is enjoyed safely.

On Sunday, attention will move to the Angus Buchanan VC Trust recreation ground on Victoria Road, where a living history encampment will open from 11am.

Visitors can explore a 17th century military camp, meet costumed characters, watch demonstrations involving pikes, muskets and artillery, and take part in interactive activities before the main battle begins at 2pm.

The Sealed Knot Society, founded more than 55 years ago, has around 4,000 members and is the largest historical re-enactment organisation in Western Europe.

The registered educational charity aims to increase public understanding of the English Civil Wars through school visits, displays and large scale battle recreations.

Admission is free throughout the weekend. Organisers recommend bringing a picnic, chairs and ear defenders for young children or anyone sensitive to the loud cannon and musket fire expected during the demonstrations.
