A NINETY-FIVE-YEAR-OLD Cinderford man has been awarded the Ushakov Medal by Russia for his bravery escorting the Arctic convoys in the Second World War.
Sidney Russell, who lives in Belle Vue Road, was presented with the medal at his home by a Russian Embassy attaché last week.
Mr Russell served on the aircraft carrier HMS Victorious during World War Two which formed part of the escort for the Arctic convoys.
The convoys provided the Soviet Union (now modern-day Russia) with vital supplies for their war effort against Nazi Germany.
Mr Russell said: “I’m delighted with this medal. During the war I was aboard HMS Victorious out in the arctic sea.
