TWO archaeological digs in Yorkley have uncovered more questions than answers.

The team of archaeologists and volunteers started a ‘dig’ near Yorkley on the site of what they hoped would prove to be the remains of a Roman fort.

In the end, the artefacts they unearthed point to the mediaeval period rather than Roman, with what looks like early ironworks on the site.

Another site near Yorkley on the remains of the lost village of Tomlin, proved more promising as they discovered the remains of both residential and agricultural buildings.

Robin Jackson of the Worcestershire Archive and Archaeology Service, who is leading the project said: “In many ways the dig in Yorkley raised more questions that it answered but they are very interesting questions.

“The Yorkley dig uncovered what looks like early iron workings but we will be bring in a specialist to investigate further.

“At Tomlin we believe the last resident was a man called Hartley James and we have spoken to a woman who is descended from one of his siblings, who remembers playing there as a child.

“He had no heirs so when he died there were no more residents.”
