A SCAM which targeted a self-employed tradesman in Coleford has been uncovered.
Around four years ago, the victim purchased advertising space in a magazine after receiving a phone call offering the service.
He duly paid £60 for the advert over the phone but he never had confirmation that it had been placed.
But on Tuesday, October 4, he received a cold call stating that he owes £4,000 for the advertising space he purchased.
He was warned that if he doesn’t pay this money, there will be a 30 per cent surcharge.
The victim refused to pay the money and was told by the scammer that a bailiff would be attending his property.
However a debt collector / bailiff did not attend at the time stated by the scammer and the victim immediately contacted the police.
Gloucestershire Police are urging the public, especially those that have previously purchased advertising for their business in a magazine over the phone, to be aware of this scam.
The police’s general advice is to only use reputable services recommended by family and friends or those who have worked satisfactorily for you before.
Avoid any cold callers that may turn up or ring unexpectedly offering their services.
Take the advice from family, friends or reputable traders before purchasing advertising or any other service.
And when it comes to household maintenance or building work always obtain at least three quotes and make sure the quote is in writing; keep back part of the cost until the job has been satisfactorily completed as this will provide an incentive for the trader to complete the job or put right any problems.
