A 22-year-old woman has died after the car she was in failed to stop for police and collided with a telegraph pole in Mile End.

The Coleford woman was a passenger in the blue Nissan Primera that failed to stop for police on Wood Road in Mile End just after 1am on April 17.

A short time later officers found the car, which had collided with a telegraph pole on the road.

The woman was airlifted to Southmead Hospital in Bristol but died a short time later.

Her next of kin and the coroner have been informed.

The driver, a 21-year-old Coleford man, was uninjured and has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving and causing death by dangerous driving. He remains in police custody at this time.

Police have referred the incident to the Independent Police Complaints Commision as is standard practice when someone dies following police contact.
