POLICE are currently investigating an attack on Bathurst Park in which flower beds were ripped up.

This follows an incident some weeks ago in which shards of glass were embedded in the cricket field wicket and the outfield.

Cllr Bob Berryman, the town mayor said: “It is absolutely horrendous and mindless. I just can’t understand why anyone would want to commit acts like these in a public spaces.

“They won’t beat us, we shall put things right.”

Jayne Smailes, CEO to Lydney Town Council, said the park groundsman has now rectified the damage to the flower beds with the expense borne by the existing budget.

Community Police Sergeant Sara Sleeman said this was the second antisocial incident to occur in the park in recent weeks.

She said: “At the start of the cricket season, shards of broken glass were partially buried in the wicket and the outfield, which could have caused serious injury to a cricketer.

“This was both dangerous and irresponsible.”

Anybody who may have witnessed the uprooting of the plants is asked to contact Gloucestershire Police on 101 and quote reference number 102 of July 12.
