TWO elderly people were taken to hospital with "serious injuries" in a collision between a car and a van on the A48 at Blakeney last week.

Emergency services were called to the scene of a two-vehicle crash at Nibley Hill, at the junction with Main Road leading to Viney Hill, last Wednesday (January 19) at around 5pm.

Police, ambulance and fire and rescue teams were all called to respond and "several" members of the public also assisted at the scene.

The collision involved a Vauxhall Meriva and an Iveco van, with a 61 year-old man, a 70 year-old man and a 70 year-old woman all suffering injuries.

Four fire engines, two from Lydney and two from Gloucester North, attended the scene and worked to free the three casualties from the damaged vehicles.

They were then taken to hospital for treatment by South Western Ambulance Service (SWAS).

A 30 year-old man who was uninjured in the crash had already been released from his vehicle by the time the fire crews arrived.

Police said that two of the elderly occupants of the Meriva had sustained "serious injuries", and remained at Southmead Hospital in Bristol last Thursday evening (January 20).

Fire crews left the scene just before 7.30pm that evening, with road closures remaining in place overnight while police completed a collision investigation.

The closures were removed on Thursday morning.

Officers launched an appeal for any witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage that they have not yet spoken to to come forward.
