A MUM stole £13,000 of the compensation awarded to her daughter after she was raped and made pregnant at the age of 11, a court heard on Tuesday.

The girl’s rapist was her mum’s partner who has since been jailed indefinitely.

The Criminal Injuries Compensation Board awarded the girl compensation of £22,000.

But the money was paid in trust to the girl’s mother because she was still under 18 - and over the next few years the mother used £13,000 of the cash on family expenses, Gloucester Crown Court was told on Tuesday.

The mum, from the Cinderford area who cannot be named, pleaded guilty to the theft and was sentenced to 16 months jail suspended for two years. She was also ordered to do 150 hours of unpaid work.

The judge, Recorder Jeremy Wright, told her "What you did was a serious breach of trust, made all the more serious by the fact that what you took was compensation for the rape of your daughter at a very young age by your then partner.”

When the daughter reached the age of 18, her mother transferred £7,000 to her bank account and told her the balance would be payable when she was 21.

But when the balance was not forthcoming, the daughter went to the police who discovered the balance of the compensation had already been spent.
