A NEWENT mother, who lost her son in a motorcycle accident last year, gave a heartfelt plea for a skatepark to be built in the town.
Before his fatal motorcycle accident last October, local resident Shaun Payne said that youngsters would treasure a skate park in the town and it would help reduce drug use and boredom.
His mother Francine, speaking at the Forest of Dean District Council’s planning meeting last week, said the skatepark on the proposed recreation ground on land off Meadow Grove would give teenagers something positive to work for.
She said: “Shaun was very passionate about the skate park and he did all he could to work with the youth workers to support the use of recreational land.
“He believed the youngsters of Newent would treasure a place they could create that this would help to build good supportive community within the younger generation.
“It would be somewhere they can go without being moved away. And where each person will be accepted.
“There are no free activities for this age group and Shaun believed in having one and how this would reduce drug use and boredom.”
A skate park could be built on land near Meadow Grove if plans for a recreation ground on the site is approved but it would require fundraising and a separate application.
