NEWENT secured promotion to the West Clubs Women’s League Premier Division One next season and have their sights set on completing an unbeaten season.
Newent claimed the Premier 2A title with a 2-2 draw at Redland UWE in a fast-paced game and have just two fixtures left of their season.
Newent applied pressure to the Redland defence, earning a short corner for their efforts but the hosts’ outstanding England Over-40s keeper made some outstanding saves.
Newent’s team commitment shone through with some brave tackles and great passing around the pitch opening up the space for forward Jenny Pensom to skilfully gain another short corner but the strike went wide at it remained 0-0 at half-time.
After the interval both teams game out strong and a break from the Redland forward earned them a short corner which they converted to go ahead.
Newent came straight back into the game, but again the Redland goalkeeper preventing them from scoring.
The leaders remained patient and eventually the equaliser came through a well-worked goal with Nessa Ball slotting the ball into the back of the net.
Determined to hold onto the draw, Newent fought hard to prevent Redland from moving the ball around the pitch with midfielder Anna Sutcliffe making strong tackles to contain Redland in their own half.
Unfortunately a Redland short corner was duly converted to take the lead once more.
Where last season Newent may have conceded the loss, they showed sheer determination to fight back with Emma Williams scoring through a well-placed reverse stick strike.
The promotion means Newent will meet Lydney in the Premier One next season.
